Visit us Twice a Year

Receiving a dental cleaning and exam is recommended every six months to achieve optimal dental health for your child. If your child has an increased risk for tooth decay or has an unusual growth pattern, we may recommend more frequent visits.

Early and regular dental visits are essential for establishing good habits and building healthy teeth and gums for life. We provide regular exams and cleanings in Wollongong to help prevent tooth decay, cavities, and other problems that can lead to pain, tooth loss, and other lasting consequences. The Australian Dental Association recommends starting dental visits when a child is one or the first tooth appears.

*Kids Dental Special available to all children aged between 1-17 with no Private Health cover or Government Assistance (CDBS).

Regular dental exams and cleaning help to:

  • Establish good oral health practices
  • Teach kids the importance of oral health
  • Learn proper brushing and flossing techniques
  • Detect dental problems early

Tooth decay is a serious problem among our children. According to the ADA, more than 40% of children in the Australia have some form of tooth decay by the time they reach kindergarten. Good oral hygiene and dental visits every six months can help prevent this and enables us to treat decay at the earliest stages to prevent further damage.

During this visit, your child’s mouth will be examined by our OHT for any signs of cavities, infections, sores, or bleeding gums. Then, all surfaces of teeth will be cleaned and polished.

We offer GAP FREE Fissure Sealants for children with Private Health Insurance Dental Benefits.

Comprehensive Exams for Kids

The goal of regular dental exams and cleaning at Confident Healthcare is to detect problems early. Identifying tooth decay and other oral health problems early enables us to provide treatment before the problem becomes bigger and more complicated to solve. During each visit, we carefully examine your child’s teeth and gums to assess overall dental health and look for potential trouble spots.

We understand that some children can become anxious of dental exams. Whether your child has generalised fear caused by past dental treatments, we can help. We have created a fun and welcoming environment for our young patients. We focus on making your child comfortable and dental visits as enjoyable as possible.

Your child’s visit may also include:

  • Fluoride treatments
  • Sealants
  • X-rays
  • Other diagnostic procedures, when needed

In addition to cleaning your child’s teeth, we focus on providing education to our young patients and their parents about maintaining good oral health. We can discuss foods and beverages that should be limited to prevent tooth decay, oral habit correction, and proper brushing and flossing techniques to help your child get started on a road to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

X-rays During Dental Visit

During your child’s dental visit, we may recommend to take x-rays. Dental X-rays are valuable part of our comprehensive exam because they can show images of your child oral health that are not visible to the eye.

Dental X-rays require very low levels of radiation exposure, and is considered safe for children and adults. Your child will be wearing heavy lead apron, which will also protect them from radiation. Also, Confident Healthcare uses advanced digital X-rays instead of film developed X-rays, which also lowers the radiation exposure.

If your child has taken X-rays recently within 6 months at another dental clinic please inform us prior to your visit.

Major Obstacles to Children’s Oral Health

  • “Baby bottle tooth decay”
    • Wipe gums with gauze or a clean washcloth and water after feeding. When teeth appear, brush daily with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
    • Put child to bed with a bottle of water, not milk or juice
  • Thumb sucking
    • Not a concern until about 4 years of age or when permanent teeth appear; after this time, it could cause dental changes
  • White spots on teeth
    • As soon as the first tooth appears (at about 6 months), begin cleaning the child’s teeth daily and schedule a dental appointment

  • Fear of the dentist
    • Hold the child in the parent’s lap during the exam
  • Difficulty creating an oral care routine
    • Involve the whole family – brush together at the same time each day to create a good habit

  • Love of sweets
    • Give children health snack options, like carrots and other fresh vegetables, plain yogurt, and cheese
  • Stains from antibiotics
    • Speak to the paediatrician before any medication is prescribed

  • Braces
    • Make sure that teens brush well around braces, using a floss threader to remove all food particles
  • Oral accidents from sports
    • Encourage children to wear mouthguards during sports

The following are key preventive measures to preserve oral health through childhood:

Fluoride treatments to strengthen tooth enamel and resist decay. This may include fluoride supplements in areas where drinking water is not optimally fluoridated. Be sure to ask your dentist about supplements to determine if they are needed.

Dental sealants to provide a further layer of protection against cavities. Sealants are made of plastic and are bonded to the teeth by the dental team.

A fun oral care regimen to help encourage children to brush more regularly. Kid’s Crest® Cavity Protection is a fluoride toothpaste with Sparkle Fun flavour just for kids. And the Oral B® Stages® Kids’ Power Toothbrush makes brushing fun, with popular Disney characters and a patented oscillating Power head.

A sealant is a thin, plastic coating applied at the dental practice to the chewing surface of molars, premolars and any deep grooves of your teeth.

Thousands of childrens walk out of dental practices every day without the treatment they require.

Braces for Children

The good news is that the placement of orthodontic braces is not at all painful, and the end result will be a beautiful straight smile.
