One of the most versatile and widely used restorative dental treatments, a crown is placed to cover or “cap” a damaged tooth in its entirety.
What are Porcelain Crowns?
A crown sometimes referred to as cap are a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. Crowns act as as a band around the tooth, reducing the effects of occlusal (biting) force, keeping the integrity of the tooth. Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth coloured crown) are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and colour or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced.
Reasons for crowns:
A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Cosmetic enhancement
- Decayed teeth
- Fractured fillings
- Large fillings
- Tooth has a root canal
Treatment
A crown procedure usually requires two appointments.
1: Before the procedure
- Dentist will diagnose for necessity of crown
- Initial impression is taken for “temporary crown” (made from a plastic material) which will be placed at the end of the initial appointment
2: Tooth preparation
- Whilst your tooth is numb, the natural tooth is prepared, approximately 1mm is removed from the tooth structure. For a bridge, the teeth adjacent to the gap will be prepared. An impression/ mould is taken and will be sent to a dental laboratory.
3: Attaching The new Crown
- After approximately 2 weeks, after the crown/ bridge is returned after fabrication by dental laboratory, you will receive your new crown.
The temporary crown is removed, the tooth cleaned and the crown carefully placed using a permanent cement. The fit, bite and ability to floss are all carefully checked for accuracy.
4: End result
- An aesthetically pleasing and functional restored tooth or gap replacement.
Regular brushing and flossing is required to maintain the new crown as well as regular checkups recommended by your dentist.
Temporary Crown
A temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.
You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
